The World Of Toe Thumbs! (()) Revised: 03/10/2012 |
When the top half of one's thumb is disproportionately wide and stubby as if it were squished partially into the knuckle.
The technical name is brachydactyly type D or BDD thumbs.
Other Names: pygmy thumb,murderer's thumb (sheesh!), nail patella syndrome, stub thumb,potter's thumb,club thumb,clubbed thumb,miller’s thumb,paddle thumb,hammerhead thumb.
One in every thousand people out there, mostly girls, have thumbs that resemble the big toe of a foot. Some have two toe thumbs, others have just one. I find all this fascinating. Especially because most people out there with toe thumbs, don't know they're part of a large group of people.

I'm 24 and I've seen all sorts of reactions to my one toe thumb. It's on my left hand and most people don't notice it, or if they do they don't say anything. When people have said something to me, it's never been negative. I never noticed they were different until I was in high school, observant, eh? About that same time, classmates started noticing, but they didn't make fun of it. It became sort of a special thing, I even ended up with one of those school sweaters that you choose what goes on the back that said "toe thumb." My grandma has two toe thumbs, and I'm the only grandchild out of about 45 grandchildren who ended up with any. I was in a class on campus just the other day and my Argentinean friend randomly noticed that I have one toe thumb and said his sister also has one. He seemed to think that the cause of it was from sucking your thumb(s) in the womb preventing them from fully developing. I don't know if that's true, but I'm glad to see so many other people that embrace their special thumbs whatever the reason is!

Hahaha…it was so fun finding this on fb! Of the 7 kids in my family, 2 of us have (what they called down south)”Miller’s thumbs” (apparently from rubbing grains w/ thumb and fingers all day). I’ve always liked mine…even when the guy (in Spanish, so it took me awhile to realize what he was saying) in Mexico asked me why I had “toes on my hand!?” I was a dental assistant for years, so people noticed them pretty often…oh, and one of my teachers in dental school had one short thumb and one long skinny one! She whispered to me one day in class “I really like your thumbs”…I looked at her kind of surprised…seemed kinda like she was making fun of them…’til she held up her one “cutie”! One of my oldest and dearest friends has them also, and when she, my sister (with them) and I are together, sometimes we willjokingly ask other people with us “What’s up with your weird thumbs!!??” Then we all hold ours up together and freak them out…hahaha. Anyway, here’s a pic…we look pretty rough as we had been camping for 5 days when we took this! Esther, Kim, and Joyce

My name is Sara and these are what I've dubbed Ninja Turtle thumbs. I beat everyone at classic nintendo because of my advantage...thumb covers both buttons, simply shift them to gain speed on your opponent. Lol...

I Feel So Loved and Special!
'This site is probably one of the best things the internet has to offer. I didn't think I was anything special until I read the statistics. One in a thousand? We're such unique snowflakes! Funny thing, though: the website says those who have clubbed thumbs are mostly girls; all of the ones I know are guys (myself included)!'

"I've been called a freak for my thumbs, but now I finally feel at home. No longer will I have to fear walking around my own neighborhood without gloves. No longer will I fear for the lives of my toe thumb children. Now we can all take off our gloves and mittens and rejoice and form a thumb colony"

Awesome!Awesome!
S. Hannon,
Desided resently to see how many of us are out there. To know that I am 1 out of 1000 and fun and interesting. I have always valued my thumbs as unique and a conversation starter. Love my two toe thumbs, and am happy to learn there are many if us out there!
